Jacob Riddling

Today we interviewed Jacob Riddling in his Studio in Bed-Stuy. We were able to get a good look at his work over the years and the new pieces that he is hoping to get out into the world in the next few months.

latest piece: ‘Flicker’ in progress

Jacob moved to Brooklyn May of 2025 to take his art to the next level. Growing up just over an hour outside pf Atlanta in a smaller college town called Athens, Georgia, Riddling was exposed to a ton of great artists and musicians. “After overlooking the rows and rows of college dorms and greek life houses, Athens is full of great creatives in all kinds of fields. It was a great place to grow up with a great artistic community. The music scene rips.”

Jacob’s grasp on color is definitely adds a whole new life to his paintings. “ I don’t know where the color palettes come from to be honest. I just love things that catch the eye, I don’t really know how to explain it. For example, I’ve always had these weird need to always buy stickers or collect stickers rather and put them on everything. I think it’s all the different colors and branding. A bedside table with stickers? Fun, vibrant, it evokes questions, it brings in these feelings of warmth. A beige side table with copper edging that you got at Ikea? Boring, bland, and it lacks life. It’s just another thing to throw a lamp and book on. Also I guess you’d be able to see all the giant coffee stain that’s on the top, but that’s a different conversation.”

“ I just really want to create and build these worlds that I think are fun and can invoke some sort of question. I want the viewers and collectors to bond with a piece based off the feelings it invokes in them rather than the colors itself. I don’t want someone to buy something of mine because it matches their throw pillows. I guess that’s my biggest retaliation with using so much color.”
